Growing up in the BMX generation its simple to see how I ended up where I am today. It was not a direct road however. Like most it started with the homemade ramp built from stolen scraps of lumber acquired from the nearest home site. Soon they were not enough. We would build jumps in the open fields around our neighborhood.
Getting a little older I found the freedom and speed that was within a road bike. Road riding came easy in those days. All the energy imaginable and nothing to do all day but ride. I completed my first century in these younger years and was hooked. At that age it was all about the freedom of taking off all day and not the competition.
Entering high school I discovered the competitive side of cycling. After a few years and some success I did what most kids that age do. I lost interest in the sport and gained an interest in coed sports. Looking back its fun to imagine where one could be.
I’ve been riding again for seven years now and have started to find that competitive drive once more. It doesn’t come as easy these days but that’s what makes it all worthwhile. Last year was a very successful year for my first season back to competition. With increased training as well as building on the conditioning of last year 2008 should be an exciting year.
